Spider’s web security window grate.

A spider’s web security window grate provides a practical conservatory addition

One of our latest projects has been to design a security window grate for a customer’s existing timber conservatory. The family dog loves to sleep in this room, but a conservatory isn’t always the coolest of spaces in the middle of summer.

From a security aspect, the conservatory windows couldn’t be left open permanently. So a grate would be a perfect solution. Allowing air to flow and circulate, the dog and conservatory will be cooler but still secure.

Rather than going for a simple grid effect, Chris wanted to design the grates to look stylish and fun and fit in with the surrounding environment. He decided on a natural theme that would tie in with the garden so the garden spider sitting on a web fitted the brief.

The construction

Chris started the project by first constructing the surrounding framework to fit the windows.

He then began to create the stylised web design within the grate, positioning a spider at the centre point on two of the grates. The other two grates had a more loose design with the spiders randomly positioned.

When all the metal pieces were securely welded in place a smart coat of black eggshell paint was applied to provide the finishing touch.

The bespoke window grates look smart and the stylised design works well with the timber frame of the conservatory. Security grates don’t have to be just functional. Making an attractive piece may take a little more time but the end result adds interest and charm.
